Travel Tales

After years of travelling and living out of my backpack, I realised that my travel photos were only glimpses into untold stories. From the well-beaten tourist trails of the world to remote corners far beyond them, I decided to write these travel stories. Together, they represent the wonderful highs and gritty realities of budget travel and I’m delighted that I’ve been able to bring them all to life.

Some tales are amusing, some are amazing and others even get a little crazy. All of them are entertaining though and collectively they form a fascinating kaleidoscope of people, places, events, history, culture, food and fun. I hope you’ll enjoy the adventures and that you’ll be inspired by the joy of travel. Not just to see the world, but to experience it in a way that will also make you a storyteller.

Travel turns you into a storyteller

ON A KNIFE EDGE

When I first encountered him he seemed so friendly and I never imagined how he would change. I was photographing the sights of downtown Rio de Janeiro when he approached me; a young guy, well-dressed with a pleasant smile. He greeted me engagingly and asked if I needed...

SANDS OF TIME

It's often true that you get what you pay for and so it was when I did a camel safari in Thar Desert near the Indian city of Jaisalmer. After assessing my options I settled on a three day tour that operator Ashit (really, that was his name but I‘ll just call him Ash) promised would be an interesting experience...

HASTA MANANA

Before embarking on my four-month journey of South America I decided I needed to learn some Spanish. It’s not something that comes naturally but I did my best in the time available. When my plane landed in Santiago I was suddenly in a rather daunting world...
